MVV and VVR (in a Nutshell)

(MVV) MACHTIGING TOT VOORLOPIG VERBLIJF / PROVISIONAL RESIDENCE PERMIT  
For Filipinos an MVV is required if you want to come/stay to the Netherlands for longer than 3 months. 

Who can come to the Netherlands for marriage or relationship?
Family reunification - You want to live together with your spouse or partner in the Netherlands. You have lived together with your partner abroad for already quite a while.

Family formation - You want to live together with your spouse or partner in the Netherlands for the first time. When you entered into a relationship or got married, your spouse or partner already lived in the Netherlands. At that time, you lived abroad.


If you want to live together with your spouse / partner in the Netherlands, you must meet the following conditions:
  • You are married or started a registered partnership and your marriage or registered partnership is registered in the Netherlands in the Basic Municipal Administration
  • Or you are both single and you can prove this with officially certified documents
  • You are no threat to public order
  • You are 21 years or older. In the case of family reunification, you have to be 18 years or older
  • You are going to live together with your spouse or partner as soon as you arrive in the Netherlands
  • You are going to share a communal household with your spouse or partner and you register yourself at the same address as your spouse or partner
  • You must pass the basic integration exam
Your partner / spouse in the Netherlands has to meet the following conditions:
  • He / she is 21 years or older. In the case of family reunification, he / she is 18 years or old
  • he / she has sufficient income in the Netherlands; in some cases the income of your partner is not a condition

(VVR) VERGUNNING TOT VERBLIJF REGULIER / RESIDENCE PERMIT

After arrival in the Netherlands

Within 3 business days after your arrival in the Netherlands you will have to register, or you will have to have made an appointment to do so, at your local municipality. Upon your registration a residence permit (“VVR, vergunning tot verblijf, regulier”) will be applied for. For your application for a temporary residence permit, the IND checks if you meet all the required conditions. You will, if required, also be tested for tuberculosis. The VVR that you will receive will be valid for 1 year. After a year, you can request for the second VVR which is valid for 5 years.

Residence permit applications in a residence permit in the Netherlands are you requesting from IND-loket. If you want to study in the Netherlands, in many cases, submit the applications to the IND educational institution.
